Why Are Only Men Considered Protectors? Women Are Redefining Raksha Bandhan and It’s About Time
Traditionally, Raksha Bandhan was understood as a sacred bond between brother and sister. Yet in 2025, many women are flipping the script....tying rakhis to their sisters, female friends, or even to non-binary folks who have supported them as protectors and allies. This article unpacks the cultural shift, considers gendered roles in festivals, and asks, isn't emotional support and protection worth celebrating, no matter its source?

Raksha Bandhan is one of India’s most cherished festivals. Each year, millions of sisters tie a sacred thread, rakhi around their brothers’ wrists, symbolizing love, duty, and protection. Traditionally, this ritual casts men as protectors and women as those needing protection. But what happens when that dynamic no longer reflects the reality of modern relationships? In today’s world, where women are CEOs, soldiers, single mothers, and emotional anchors for their families, the idea of needing “protection” from a male figure feels increasingly outdated. Nowadays, many women are choosing to tie rakhis to other women, sisters, friends, colleagues, or even mentors, who have played protective, guiding, and empowering roles in their lives.
Take Aanya, a 26-year-old teacher in Delhi, who has been tying a rakhi to her best friend Megha for the past three years. “She’s the one who stood by me when I had no one, helped me get therapy, and even protected me from a toxic relationship,” Aanya shares. “Why should my gratitude and bond be limited by her gender?” This evolving interpretation of Raksha Bandhan resonates more with the true spirit of the festival, celebrating a bond of care and commitment rather than adhering to rigid gender norms.
Of course, not everyone is on board with this change. Critics argue that altering centuries-old customs dilutes cultural purity. But what is culture if not dynamic and alive? Traditions need to evolve to stay relevant. Just as we’ve seen men fasting for their wives during Karva Chauth or women performing last rites, Raksha Bandhan is also being redefined. And that’s a good thing.
3. Inclusivity and Emotional Truth
The transformation isn’t just for cisgender women. The LGBTQ+ community is also redefining Raksha Bandhan. Trans women, non-binary folks, and queer siblings are celebrating the festival to honor those who have supported them, no matter their gender. This raises a bigger question: Isn’t it worth celebrating emotional safety and support, even if it comes from someone who doesn’t fit the traditional mold?
At its core, Raksha Bandhan has always carried some patriarchal vibes, brothers “protecting” sisters, which often reinforces the notion of women as delicate. But today, real protection takes many forms, a friend who checks in, a mentor who offers guidance, a sister who stands up for you. In this context, a reliable female friend might be more of a “rakshak” than a brother who’s absent or indifferent.
Rethinking Raksha Bandhan Is Not Disrespect, It’s Evolution
As India navigates gender equality and evolving family dynamics, it’s only natural for its festivals to mirror that change. Tying rakhi to women isn’t about dismissing tradition, it’s about broadening its significance. It’s a courageous, inclusive move that celebrates love, loyalty, and protection, no matter where it comes from. This Raksha Bandhan, perhaps it’s time to reflect: Who truly protects you—and why not honor them, regardless of their gender?
