When the British decided to grant independence to India, Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of India, was entrusted with setting the date for the transfer of power. While freedom came in 1947, the formal process began earlier with the Indian Independence Act being passed on 4th July 1947 by the British Parliament. This act paved the way for India and Pakistan to be recognized as two separate dominions.
Interestingly, Pakistan’s Independence Day was marked on 14th August 1947, while India’s was celebrated the next day 15th August. But why this difference? Let’s look at the main reasons.
