Why the World Is Watching Ahmedabad After CWG 2026

The final moments of the 2026 Commonwealth Games were not just about saying goodbye to Glasgow. They marked the beginning of something much bigger for India. As Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra and Indian Olympic Association president PT Usha received the Commonwealth Games flag, the world witnessed the official start of India's journey towards hosting the historic 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad. The emotional ceremony celebrated India's growing influence in global sports while giving millions of fans a glimpse of what could become one of the country's biggest sporting spectacles.

The most memorable moment of the closing ceremony came when Glasgow officially handed over the Commonwealth Games flag to India. The flag travelled through distinguished dignitaries before reaching Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, IOA president PT Usha and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi. The ceremony officially launched the countdown to Ahmedabad 2030, making India only the second nation to host the Commonwealth Games twice after successfully organising the event in New Delhi in 2010.

After the official handover, India delivered a vibrant cultural presentation based on the message of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, meaning "The World Is One Family." Actor Manushi Chhillar led the opening performance, while composer Shankar Mahadevan created a musical journey blending tradition with modern sounds. A special film introduced Ahmedabad as a city where history, culture and world-class infrastructure come together, presenting it as a confident host for the landmark centenary Commonwealth Games.

One of the evening's most touching highlights was an Indo-Scottish musical collaboration. Sitar maestro Rishab Sharma performed alongside Scottish musician Ross Ainslie, creating a beautiful fusion of Indian classical music and Scottish melodies. The performance symbolised friendship, respect and the smooth transition between the outgoing and incoming hosts. It reminded audiences that the Commonwealth Games are not only about competition but also about celebrating cultures from across the world.

India finished fourth in the medal table with 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze. Although the tally was lower than Birmingham 2022, the achievement carried greater significance because several sports where India traditionally wins medals, such as shooting, wrestling, badminton, hockey and table tennis, were not part of the programme. Despite these challenges, Indian athletes delivered outstanding performances and once again proved their ability to compete at the highest level.

The 2030 Commonwealth Games will be more than another international sporting event. They will celebrate 100 years of Commonwealth Games history while giving India another opportunity to showcase its sporting infrastructure, hospitality and cultural richness.
