Studies have reported associations between pollutants such as PM2.5, PM10 and nitrogen dioxide and suicide risk, while researchers continue to examine how strong and causal these links really are.

You may think of air pollution as a problem for your lungs, heart and breathing. But researchers have also been studying a less obvious question: could polluted air be connected with mental health and suicide risk? Several observational studies and meta-analyses have reported associations between air pollution, particularly particulate matter, and suicide. The evidence does not prove that polluted air directly causes suicidal behaviour, but the connection is serious enough to warrant attention

PM2.5 refers to extremely small particles that are 2.5 micrometres or smaller in diameter. Because these particles can penetrate deep into the lungs, they have long been studied for physical health effects. Research has also explored whether inflammation and other biological responses linked with air pollution could relate to mental health. A major review found evidence supporting an association between long-term PM2.5 exposure and depression, while also identifying possible links between particulate pollution and suicide. The researchers cautioned that differences between studies and other confounding factors make causal conclusions difficult.
A 2021 systematic review and meta-analysis examined 18 studies on air pollution and suicide. For an interquartile-range increase in exposure, the pooled relative risk was 1.02 for PM2.5, 1.01 for PM10 and 1.03 for nitrogen dioxide. These figures represent statistical associations rather than an individual's personal probability of suicide. The researchers also found differences between pollutants and noted substantial variation among studies. That matters because air pollution exposure does not occur in isolation, and factors such as temperature, socioeconomic conditions and existing mental health problems can influence suicide risk.
The relationship becomes more complex when depression is considered. Research has reported associations between particulate pollution and depression, which itself is an established risk factor for suicidal thoughts and behaviour. This does not mean pollution automatically causes depression or suicide. Instead, researchers are investigating whether several pathways may overlap. Inflammation, biological stress responses and changes affecting the nervous system have been proposed as possible mechanisms, but these explanations remain under study. The available evidence is strongest for an association and weaker for proving a direct cause-and-effect pathway.
This distinction is easy to miss when a scientific finding becomes a headline. If a study reports higher suicide risk alongside increased pollution exposure, it does not mean that every person exposed to polluted air faces the same outcome. The studies are generally observational, meaning researchers examine patterns in populations rather than deliberately exposing people to pollution. Other factors can affect the results, and researchers themselves have highlighted problems such as differences in exposure measurement and residual confounding.
You cannot control every source of outdoor pollution, but you can reduce exposure when air quality is poor. Check your local air-quality reading before spending long periods outdoors, especially if you have respiratory or cardiovascular conditions. Keep indoor air cleaner by reducing smoke and other indoor pollution sources, and follow local health guidance during severe pollution episodes. Just as importantly, do not treat air pollution as an explanation for sudden changes in mood or suicidal thoughts. Mental health concerns need direct attention and support rather than being attributed to one environmental factor.
The research does not show that polluted air directly causes suicide, but it does point to a question scientists are continuing to investigate. Air pollution already affects physical health, and possible links with depression and suicide add another reason to take exposure seriously. At the same time, suicide has multiple causes, including mental health, social, economic and personal factors. If someone is experiencing suicidal thoughts, the priority is immediate human support from a trusted person or qualified mental-health professional. Environmental risks matter, but they should never replace compassionate mental-health care.
