How Amba Was Reborn as Shikhandi to Defeat Bhishma

What if one of the most important moments in the Mahabharata began with a woman who refused to let injustice decide her destiny?

Long before Shikhandi stood on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, there was Amba, the eldest princess of Kashi. Her life was shattered after Bhishma abducted her from her swayamvara and later refused to marry her because of his vow of celibacy. When even King Shalva rejected her, Amba was left humiliated and furious. But she did something extraordinary. She turned her pain into a vow. Her determination eventually led to a boon from Lord Shiva, a rebirth as Shikhandini and a mysterious encounter with a Yaksha. Years later, that extraordinary chain of events would become one of the key reasons behind Bhishma’s fall.






Amba was the eldest princess of Kashi, and her life was expected to follow the path of royalty. But everything changed when Bhishma arrived at her swayamvara and took Amba and her sisters for Hastinapura. Amba later revealed that she loved King Shalva. Bhishma allowed her to leave, but Shalva refused to accept her after she had been taken by Bhishma. Amba then returned to Bhishma, hoping he would marry her, but his lifelong vow prevented him from doing so. Her rejection left her facing humiliation, anger and a deep sense of injustice.




Amba did not allow her story to end with rejection. She chose a path of severe penance, determined to obtain the power to bring about Bhishma’s downfall. According to the traditional Mahabharata narrative, her devotion and determination led to a boon from Lord Shiva. Shiva promised that Amba would become the cause of Bhishma’s death in a future birth. This changed everything. Amba’s revenge was no longer merely a personal desire. It had become part of a larger destiny. She later gave up her life, setting the stage for the mysterious rebirth that would follow.

Amba was reborn in the family of King Drupada of Panchala. She was born as a girl and named Shikhandini, but her destiny was connected to the promise made by Shiva. According to the traditional story, Drupada knew that this child would eventually become connected with Bhishma’s downfall. Shikhandini was therefore raised in circumstances that prepared her for a future very different from that of an ordinary princess. The story now moved from Amba’s personal suffering to the fulfilment of a vow that had begun in her previous life.

A major turning point came when Shikhandini faced a crisis connected with her marriage. She eventually encountered a Yaksha named Sthunakarna, who offered to exchange physical forms with her. According to the traditional account, Shikhandini accepted the exchange, taking the Yaksha’s male form while Sthunakarna took a female form. Later, Kubera learned what had happened and became angry with the Yaksha. A curse followed, making Sthunakarna remain in the female form until Shikhandini’s life ended. Through this extraordinary episode, Shikhandini became known as Shikhandi.

Years later, the promise made to Amba finally reached Kurukshetra. Shikhandi stood on the Pandava side during the great war. Bhishma knew Shikhandi’s history and regarded Shikhandi as someone who had been born female. Because of his personal vow not to fight a woman or someone he considered to have been a woman, Bhishma would not raise his weapons against Shikhandi. This created the opening the Pandavas needed. Shikhandi was placed before Bhishma while Arjuna attacked from behind Shikhandi’s position, turning an ancient personal vow into a decisive moment on the battlefield.

The battlefield moment was devastating. Bhishma saw Shikhandi approaching but refused to fight. Arjuna then released a powerful series of arrows at the great warrior. Bhishma eventually fell from his chariot and lay upon a bed of arrows. This was not a simple victory by strength. The circumstances surrounding Bhishma’s fall were deeply connected to his own vows, Amba’s determination and the unusual destiny of Shikhandi. The story shows how seemingly separate events across different stages of life can eventually converge into one decisive moment.

Shikhandi’s story is one of the Mahabharata’s most complex narratives because it brings together revenge, rebirth, divine blessings and questions of identity. It should not be reduced to a simple story about gender transformation. At its heart is the unfinished journey of Amba and the fulfilment of a vow that crossed lifetimes. The story also reminds us that the Mahabharata rarely presents destiny as straightforward. Human decisions, vows and consequences constantly intersect. Shikhandi became the person through whom Amba’s long-standing purpose finally reached Bhishma on the battlefield.

The most striking part of this story is not simply that Amba was reborn. It is that her determination survived the end of her first life. From rejection came anger. From anger came penance. From penance came Shiva’s boon. From that boon came rebirth, and from rebirth came Shikhandi. Finally, on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, the unfinished story reached its conclusion. Whether read as mythology, symbolism or a story about destiny, Amba’s journey remains unforgettable because it asks a powerful question: Can a promise made in one chapter of life shape everything that comes after it?
