The Seven Saptarishis: Who Are They Actually
Sapta Rishis associated with Rishi Panchami include Kasayapa, Atri, Bharadwaja, Vishwamitra, Gautama, Jamadagni and Vashishtha. They are respected as the sages due to their spiritual wisdom and preaching. Sapta means seven, while Rishi refers to sage or seer. Consequently, the worship of the Saptarishis during Rishi Panchami is not only a ceremony, but a sign of reverence for the wise persons who have contributed to the preservation and dissemination of knowledge.
Why Do People Remember Rishi Panchami?
The vrata of Rishi Panchami was basically seen as a day of cleansing oneself through penance and meditation. According to the ancient stories, the vrata was observed to obtain forgiveness for any mistakes made unwittingly and neglect of their religious duties.. Such a vrata urges devotees to introspect, practice self-restraint and remember the lessons of the wise. While purification may be seen as a physical process, this vrata could also be viewed as the process of cleansing oneself from all negative thoughts and practices like anger. Thus, the old vrata becomes relevant even today.
Rishi Panchami Puja and Vrat
The devotee usually starts his day by taking a bath and then gets ready for the worshipping of the Saptarishis. Pictures or idols of the Seven sages are usually placed appropriately for worshipping along with offering water, sandal wood, flowers, agarbatti, diya and other customary offerings. There are some practices where there is bathing of the pictures using Panchamrit. Fasting and having light meals is also a common practice among devotees depending upon their family or regional tradition.
Menstruation and Rishi Panchami
However, it is necessary to note that the taboos surrounding the process of menstruation need to be distinguished from the biological event itself. The menstruation process is a normal body activity that does not represent anything unclean. Practices concerning the menstrual process in old societies may have been determined by notions such as discipline, family structure, hygiene, and need for rest. Nowadays, Rishi Panchami can be celebrated without making menstruation a taboo and without linking the latter with feelings of shame and impurity. The broader aspects of spirituality connected with this festival can still be honored.
