Why Balarama Was Furious With Bhima After the War

The final battle of the Mahabharata was expected to end with honour. Bhima and Duryodhana, two unmatched warriors, stood face to face in a fierce Gada Yuddha. Every rule of combat was known to them. But then, in one unexpected moment, Bhima struck Duryodhana below the waist, a move clearly forbidden in mace fighting. Was this an act of Adharma? The duel between Bhima and Duryodhana followed the traditional rules of Gada Yuddha, where striking below the navel was prohibited. During the intense battle, Lord Krishna signalled Bhima to target Duryodhana's thigh. Bhima obeyed, delivering the decisive blow that ended the fight. Although the strike secured victory for the Pandavas, it immediately sparked controversy because it clearly violated the accepted code of mace combat.




Balarama, the revered teacher of both Bhima and Duryodhana in mace fighting, witnessed the final moments of the duel. According to the Mahabharata, he became furious after seeing Bhima's strike. He declared that attacking below the waist was against the principles of Gada Yuddha and criticised Bhima's action as unfair. Balarama even considered punishing Bhima before Lord Krishna intervened and explained the larger context behind the decision.


Krishna reminded Balarama that Duryodhana had repeatedly violated Dharma throughout his life. He had attempted to poison Bhima, plotted the burning of the Lakshagriha, humiliated Draupadi in the royal court and rejected every peaceful solution before the war. Krishna argued that the battlefield was no longer dealing with ordinary justice but with restoring Dharma after years of deliberate wrongdoing. His explanation persuaded Balarama to withdraw his anger.

The strike on Duryodhana's thigh was not only a military decision. During the infamous dice game, Duryodhana insulted Draupadi by slapping his thigh and inviting her to sit on it. Deeply enraged, Bhima publicly vowed that one day he would shatter Duryodhana's thigh. Years later, during the final duel, that promise became reality. The moment represented both the fulfilment of Bhima's oath and the symbolic punishment for Duryodhana's earlier insult.

This episode remains one of the Mahabharata's most discussed ethical questions because it challenges the difference between following rules and delivering justice. The epic does not present Bhima's action as a simple victory. Instead, it invites readers to reflect on whether strict rules should always prevail when someone has repeatedly abandoned righteousness. The story encourages thoughtful reflection rather than offering an easy answer.
