Why Did Uttanka Steal the Queen’s Precious Earrings?

What would you do if your teacher asked for a gurudakshina that could put your life in danger? In the Mahabharata, Uttanka faced exactly such a challenge. After completing his education and years of serving his guru, Uttanka insisted on offering a final gift before leaving. His guru, Rishi Veda, did not want anything. But when Uttanka approached his guru’s wife, she gave him a seemingly impossible task: bring the precious earrings worn by the queen of King Paushya. He had only four days. What Uttanka did not know was that Takshaka, the powerful king of the Nagas, also wanted those earrings.

In the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata, Uttanka is described as a devoted disciple of Rishi Veda. He had spent years serving his teacher and learning under his guidance. When his education was complete, Uttanka wanted to offer gurudakshina before leaving. Rishi Veda initially told him that nothing was required. But Uttanka continued to insist. Finally, he was directed to ask the guru’s wife what she desired. Her request would completely change his journey. Instead of an ordinary offering, Uttanka was given a difficult mission involving the precious earrings of King Paushya’s queen.

The guru’s wife asked Uttanka to bring her the queen’s earrings. She intended to wear them during an important religious observance in the presence of Brahmins. There was one major problem: Uttanka had only four days to complete the task. He immediately accepted the challenge. For him, this was not simply about jewellery. It was about fulfilling a promise made to his guru. The pressure was enormous, but Uttanka did not step back. His journey now depended on reaching King Paushya, obtaining the earrings and returning before the deadline expired.

Uttanka eventually reached King Paushya’s palace and asked the queen for the earrings. She agreed to give them to him, but before handing them over, she issued a serious warning. The earrings were not ordinary ornaments. According to the traditional Mahabharata story, Takshaka, the king of the Nagas, had his eyes on them. Uttanka now knew that someone powerful wanted what he was carrying. Still, he believed he could complete his mission. He accepted the earrings and began his return journey, unaware that the queen’s warning was about to become terrifyingly real.

Takshaka is one of the most important serpent figures in the Mahabharata and is identified as a powerful Naga king. His name later becomes closely connected with the story of King Parikshit and the events leading to the great snake sacrifice. In Uttanka’s story, however, the immediate danger is much simpler: Takshaka wants the precious earrings. Uttanka is carrying them directly toward his guru’s wife, while Takshaka is waiting for an opportunity to take them. The mission has suddenly changed from a difficult journey into a race against an unseen enemy.

Uttanka had successfully obtained the earrings, so it would have been easy to believe that his hardest challenge was finished. But the story deliberately creates a moment of false security. He had been warned about Takshaka, yet he did not expect the Naga king to appear directly before him. This is what makes the Uttanka story so suspenseful. The danger was not hidden in the distant forest or inside the palace. It was moving toward him. A simple act of carrying the earrings had placed Uttanka directly in the path of one of the Mahabharata’s most powerful serpent kings.
