Why Shiva Left His Own City of Kashi: The Untold Story

Kashi is known as the city of Lord Shiva, a sacred place where devotees believe Shiva's presence is eternal. But according to a famous Puranic tradition, there was once a time when Lord Shiva himself had to leave Kashi. The reason was neither war nor defeat. It was a powerful king named Divodasa, whose unusual condition changed the entire city. Even more surprising, when Shiva sent his divine companions back to Kashi, they did not return. One by one, they became captivated by the city's spiritual power. Then Ganesha arrived, and the story took an unexpected turn.

According to the traditional story, Brahma appointed King Divodasa as the ruler of Kashi. Divodasa was not portrayed as a cruel or destructive king. Instead, he wanted human beings to govern the earthly realm without interference from the gods. He placed a condition before Brahma: Kashi would be ruled by humans, not divine beings. Brahma accepted the condition. As a result, the gods had to leave Kashi. Even Lord Shiva departed and went to Mount Mandara. But leaving Kashi was not easy for Shiva, because the sacred city was deeply connected with him.

Although Shiva had left, he could not simply forget Kashi. He wanted to know what was happening there, so divine beings were sent back to investigate. But something unexpected happened. Those who entered Kashi became fascinated by the city's spiritual atmosphere and did not return to Shiva. The Yoginis came and stayed. The Sun deity came and became absorbed in Kashi's glory. Other divine beings experienced the same transformation. Each attempt to discover what was happening only revealed another reason why Kashi was so difficult to leave.

This is one of the most intriguing parts of the story. Shiva's messengers were supposed to observe Kashi and report back. Instead, they became part of its spiritual world. The city itself seemed to hold such a powerful attraction that returning to Shiva became secondary. The story presents Kashi not simply as a geographical place, but as a sacred space with its own spiritual force. Each divine messenger who stayed behind made the problem more complicated. Shiva needed someone who could enter Kashi without becoming permanently absorbed by its extraordinary atmosphere.

Finally, Lord Ganesha was sent to Kashi. But there was a major problem. King Divodasa was not an evil ruler who could simply be defeated. He was governing the city successfully, so removing him through force would not solve the deeper problem. Ganesha therefore chose a different path. Through wisdom, he gradually awakened a sense of detachment and spiritual longing within the king. Instead of fighting Divodasa, Ganesha helped him look beyond worldly power. This became the turning point of the entire story and eventually changed Kashi's future.

As Ganesha's influence worked upon him, King Divodasa began to experience a deeper desire for spiritual freedom. The throne that once represented power and responsibility no longer seemed like the ultimate destination. Eventually, according to the legend, Divodasa gave up his kingdom. His decision removed the condition that had kept the gods away from Kashi. What makes the story powerful is that the king was not defeated in battle. He was transformed from within. The lesson suggests that sometimes the strongest change does not come through force. It comes when a person willingly chooses a higher purpose.

With Divodasa's departure, the path was finally open for Shiva to return. The Lord came back to Kashi, accompanied by Goddess Parvati. The city once again became associated with Shiva's divine presence. The return carries a deeper meaning within the tradition. Shiva had left physically, but his connection with Kashi had never truly disappeared. The entire sequence of events had ultimately led back to the same point: Shiva and Kashi together. The story therefore transforms what initially looks like Shiva's separation from the city into a powerful journey toward his return.

The deepest message of this legend may be hidden beneath the story of gods and kings. Kashi represents a place where worldly power eventually gives way to spiritual awakening. Divodasa began as a powerful ruler who wanted control over the earthly realm. Yet he ultimately developed a desire for liberation and left the throne voluntarily. Shiva's return then completed the transformation. This is why Kashi is traditionally associated with moksha, devotion and liberation. The story suggests that when attachment to power fades, the path to the divine becomes open again.

The most surprising part of this story is that Shiva did not return to Kashi by defeating King Divodasa.

The king himself eventually chose to leave.

That is what makes the legend so powerful.

Ganesha did not rely on force. He awakened wisdom.

Divodasa did not lose a war. He lost his attachment to the throne.

And Shiva did not abandon Kashi forever. He returned to the sacred city that remained deeply connected with him.
