This custom has its roots in a well-known legend of Hanuman and Sita, which is mentioned in some Ramayana commentaries as well as popular folklore. In the story, Hanuman sees Sita one day, and Sita is putting sindoor. Curious, he asks her, maa what are you doing? Sita replies, I put sindoor so that my husband, Lord Rama, will have a long life and be well.

When Hanuman heard this, the devotee of Rama that he is, he was extremely moved. He thought, If sindoor is capable of ensuring well-being for Rama, just imagine the effect of me putting it all over my body. Without hesitation, he then smeared sindoor all over his body. When Rama saw Hanuman smeared in sindoor, he was amused and moved. Then Sita explained the matter to Rama. He heart was further opened to Hanuman's pure, selfless devotion. He then pronounced that those who offered sindoor to Hanuman with devotion would receive his blessings. Thus, this beautiful tradition of offering sindoor to Hanuman began.

Sindoor is thought to carry protective qualities to protect against negativity. To apply to Hanuman(s) idol and even take a little as prasad is thought to avert evil eye, sickness, and bad luck.
