There is no official limit on the number of cigarettes you can bring on board for domestic flights in the U.S., but international flights do have restrictions:

International arrivals can bring 100 to 200 cigarettes (a carton) into the U.S. Travelers from American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands may carry up to five cartons.

Passengers may bring in 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars, or 250 grams of tobacco.

The EU allows travelers to bring in a maximum of 800 cigarettes, 400 cigarillos, 200 cigars, or 1 kg of tobacco

India: Passengers flying into India can bring up to 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars, or 250 grams of tobacco duty-free. Exceeding these limits may result in customs duties and penalties. Additionally, carrying large quantities of cigarettes may raise suspicion and require further declaration at customs.
Assuming you exceed these limits, it can cause additional taxes or confiscation of extra cigarettes by customs.


Not so fast! If you are under 21 and consider carrying cigarettes, think again! In the U.S., it is illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to buy or possess tobacco products. That means whether you’re on a domestic flight or not, you cannot legally carry cigarettes on a plane if you’re underage. By comparison, the legal smoking age in many European nations is 18, which means younger travelers can bring cigarettes without legal risk.



Unlike cigarettes, chewing tobacco can be taken in carryon luggage and on checked luggage. But make sure to check local laws in places you’re traveling if you plan on using smokeless tobacco products, since some countries ban it outright.

If you’re a cigar fan, good news! However, cigars can be carried in both your carry-on and checked luggage without restriction on domestic U.S. flights. However, on the way back from an international vacation you are no usually permitted more than 100 cigars.
