There is something instantly appealing about The Love Hypothesis. Take a brilliant PhD student, pair her with a famously intimidating professor, add a fake-dating arrangement and wait for the obvious romantic disaster to unfold. On paper, it is almost impossible to resist.

The film adaptation has the ingredients of a classic grumpy professor and sunshine student rom-com. Lili Reinhart brings warmth to Olive, while Tom Bateman gives Adam the expected cold, intimidating energy. But there is one problem: the romance moves so quickly that some of the emotional build-up never gets enough time to breathe.





Olive Smith is a dedicated third-year biology PhD candidate at Stanford whose research focuses on the early detection of pancreatic cancer. Her carefully organised life takes an unexpected turn when her best friend, Anh, develops feelings for Olive’s crush. Trying to convince Anh that she has moved on, Olive impulsively claims she is dating someone and then kisses the first man she encounters. Unfortunately, that man is Dr Adam Carlsen, a notoriously stern biology professor. The accidental kiss becomes the beginning of the film’s central fake dating romance.



Adam Carlsen is designed to be the classic grumpy professor love interest. Students are intimidated by him, his reputation is brutal, and his personality appears almost completely opposite to Olive’s. Tom Bateman plays that cold exterior with enough confidence to make the character immediately recognisable. The fun begins when Adam unexpectedly agrees to continue Olive’s fake relationship instead of exposing her embarrassing mistake. What starts as an unusual arrangement quickly creates opportunities for the two characters to spend more time together. The formula is familiar, but that familiarity is part of the film’s charm.

The fake dating trope works because both characters enter the arrangement with practical reasons rather than romantic intentions. Olive wants Anh to believe she has genuinely moved on, while Adam has his own reason for agreeing to the arrangement. Soon, the fake relationship brings mandatory coffee dates, awkward encounters and increasingly close proximity. These situations provide some of the film’s most entertaining moments. The problem is that the transition from pretending to genuinely falling for each other happens at remarkable speed. The audience can see where the story is going, but the emotional journey sometimes feels abbreviated.

The biggest challenge for The Love Hypothesis movie adaptation is not the premise. It is the pace of the romance. Olive and Adam have an appealing contrast, and the romantic chemistry is clearly meant to drive the story. But chemistry becomes more satisfying when viewers have time to watch trust develop through small conversations, disagreements and unexpected moments. Here, some of that progression feels compressed. The film gets to the romantic payoff quickly, but the journey toward it could have been given more breathing room. That may be particularly noticeable to viewers who already know the book.

Adapting a beloved romance is never simple, especially when readers already have a detailed picture of its characters. Ali Hazelwood’s The Love Hypothesis built its appeal around the slow development between Olive and Adam, along with the tension created by their contrasting personalities. The film has to compress that experience into a much shorter runtime. That creates an unavoidable challenge. Someone discovering the story for the first time may simply enjoy the charming rom-com, while longtime readers may notice the scenes, emotions and gradual development that have been condensed.

Despite its rushed moments, The Love Hypothesis remains an easy watch for viewers looking for a light romantic story. The fake-dating setup is fun, the characters have an obvious contrast, and the central relationship has enough charm to keep the story moving. But the film works better when viewed as a breezy romantic comedy rather than expecting every emotional beat from the novel to receive equal attention. Its biggest weakness is also its biggest temptation: the story wants to give viewers the romance quickly. For some, that will be satisfying. For book fans, it may feel like something important was left behind.
