5 things not to tell your teenager when they share about their first love

One day, your teenager may come to you and say, "I like someone." You may feel worried. You may think they are too young or that they should only focus on school. But first love can feel very real to a teenager. Teenage love, first crush, teen relationships, and young love are new feelings for them. The way you react can decide whether they talk to you again or start hiding things from you.

Imagine your child sitting beside you and suddenly saying, "Mom, Dad, I think I like someone." What would you say? Many parents may panic.

You may start thinking about their studies, their future or whether this person is right for them. That is normal. Parents naturally want to protect their children. But sometimes, the best thing you can do is simply listen. Your teenager may not know much about love yet. But that does not mean their feelings are fake. Their first crush can feel very important to them. So, before you give a lecture, think about these five things you should avoid saying.

You are too young for love

This may be the first thing that comes to your mind. But saying this can make your child feel that you do not understand them. You can tell them that they are still young while also listening to what they feel. Try asking, "What do you like about this person?" It is a simple question, but it can start a good conversation.

It is just a silly crush

Maybe it is just a crush. Maybe it will last a few weeks. But your teenager does not know that yet. For them, it may feel very important right now. Calling it silly can make them feel embarrassed. They may think, "My parents will make fun of me if I talk about this." And next time, they may keep quiet.

Stop this and focus on your studies

Of course, studies are important. But your child also has feelings. If you only talk about marks and school, they may feel that you are not interested in what is happening in their life. Instead, talk about balance. You can say, "It is okay to like someone, but do not forget your studies and other things that matter." This sounds much less harsh.

You cannot talk to that person

Parents usually say this because they are worried. They want to keep their child safe. But if you suddenly say no without hearing the full story, your teenager may start hiding things.

First, ask some simple questions.

"Who is this person?"

"How do they treat you?"

"Do you feel safe and comfortable with them?"

This is also a good time to talk about healthy relationships, respect and boundaries.

This one can hurt the most. Imagine your teenager comes to you after their first relationship ends. They are already sad. If you say, "I told you this would happen," they may feel even worse.

Instead, sit with them.

Let them cry if they want to.

Let them talk.

You do not always need to fix the problem. Sometimes, they just need their parent to listen.

What Can You Say Instead?

You do not need to give your teenager a long speech. Keep it simple.

Ask:

"Do you like them?"

"How do they treat you?"

"Are you happy around them?"

"Do you want my advice or do you just want me to listen?"

These small questions can help your child feel safe with you.

Your teenager's first love may not last forever. It may end after a few weeks or months. But the trust between you and your child can last much longer. So, when your teenager talks aboutteenage love, do not panic. Listen first. Talk calmly. And let them know that they can always come to you, even when life gets confusing.
