Why “If He Wanted To, He Would” Is the Most Overrated Relationship Advice?

Kashish Pandey | Sept 09, 2026, 19:00 IST
“If he wanted to, he would” is probably one of the most common lines people hear when they are confused about a relationship. It can feel like the perfect answer when someone is not calling, texting or making plans. But relationship advice is not always this simple. A person can care about you and still struggle to express feelings, communicate properly or deal with their own fears. What matters is looking at the full picture, understanding the relationship effort, and asking if the relationship meets your needs.

You are talking to someone you really like. At first, everything feels exciting. You talk for hours, make plans and start imagining where things could go. Then something changes. They take longer to reply. They stop making plans. You start feeling like you are the only one trying. So you tell a friend about it. The answer is almost always the same: “If he wanted to, he would.” He would text if he missed you. He would make plans if he cared. He would commit if he really wanted a future. It sounds convincing. But real relationships are rarely that easy.

Sometimes It Is Not About Wanting You

People can have feelings and still behave badly. Someone may care about you but be scared of getting serious. They may not know how to communicate. They could also be going through stress or dealing with personal problems that you know nothing about. That does not mean you should keep accepting behaviour that hurts you. It simply means that one action does not always tell the complete story. Research on relationships has also shown that uncertainty and commitment can affect how people feel about their relationships. So instead of judging everything by one missed call or late reply, look at what happens regularly.

But Do Not Ignore A Pattern

This is where the saying has some truth. If someone is busy one day, that is normal. If someone repeatedly cancels plans, avoids talking about the relationship and makes you feel like an option, that is different. Their behaviour is telling you something. You do not have to keep finding reasons for them. Good relationship effort does not mean someone has to text you every five minutes or always be available. It means they show that you matter to them in some way. They make time when they can. They listen. They communicate. They try to fix things when there is a problem. That effort matters.

One of the worst things this advice can make you do is start testing someone. You stop texting to see if they will text first. You wait for them to make the next plan. You post something on social media hoping they will notice. Then you sit with your phone and wonder what their silence means. That can become exhausting. Instead, say what you actually want. If you want more communication, tell them. If you want something serious, talk about it. If you feel like they are pulling away, ask them. You may not get the answer you want, but at least you are not spending weeks trying to read their mind.

Your Needs Matter Too

There is another question that is often forgotten.

Instead of only asking, “Does he want me?”, ask:

“Is this relationship giving me what I need?”

These are two very different questions. He may like you. He may care about you. He may even have feelings for you. But if you want a serious relationship and he does not, that difference still matters. You do not need to prove that he is a bad person. Sometimes two people simply want different things.

So, Is “If He Wanted To, He Would” Wrong?

Not completely. If someone keeps giving you very little effort even after you have clearly told them what you need, you should pay attention. But the phrase becomes harmful when it is treated like a rule that explains every relationship. People have fears. People make mistakes. People communicate differently. Sometimes people care but do not know how to show it. The better approach is to look at the overall pattern.

Ask yourself:

Does this person listen to me?

Do they make an effort?

Can we talk openly?

Do their actions match what they say?

And most importantly:

Do I feel respected and valued here?

“If he wanted to, he would” sounds powerful because it makes relationships look simple. But they are not. Actions matter, but so do communication, circumstances and emotional maturity. You should not spend months making excuses for someone who constantly makes you feel unwanted. At the same time, you should not decide what someone feels based on one missed call or one bad day. Look at the bigger picture. Sometimes the answer is not about whether he wants you enough. Sometimes the better question is whether the relationship you are getting is good enough for you.
