Nandi's devotion touched Lord Shiva's heart. Shiva appeared before him and asked what he wanted. Nandi did not ask for a long life, wealth, or any special powers. He simply said that he wanted to stay close to Lord Shiva forever. Hearing this, Lord Shiva smiled and blessed him with immortality. He made Nandi his closest companion, the leader of his followers, and the guardian of Kailash. From that day, Nandi was never separated from Lord Shiva.



In every Shiva temple, Nandi sits directly in front of the Shiva Linga. This is not by chance. His posture teaches an important lesson. Just as Nandi never takes his eyes away from Shiva, devotees are also encouraged to keep their minds focused on God. Many people also whisper their prayers into Nandi's ear. It is believed that Nandi carries these prayers to Lord Shiva.
