Why Radha Rani Is Called Saubhagya

We often come across the quote, “Sons are born out of good fortune but daughters are born out of good luck.” However, for the Radha Rani festival, this concept gets a different spiritual connotation altogether. Radha is considered to be a manifestation of saubhagya, devotion, and divine love, and even the cow has always been considered the icon of fortune and good luck. But there is a story mentioned in the Garg Samhita about the birth of Radha with a large number of cows, her father Vrishabhanu and a unique Bhadrapada Shukla Ashtami. As Radha Ashtami comes closer, this story becomes a very interesting one.





According to the traditional definition provided by the Garg Samhita, the size of a herd turns into an interesting way of representing one's luck and status. If a person owns nine lakh cows and has a person in charge of securing them, then such a person will be called Nanda. In the case of Shri Krishna, the definition acquires even more meaning because Shri Krishna was brought up in Nanda's family in Gokul. Thus, the great herd of cows is not just the representation of the possession, but rather of prosperity and pastoral Braj culture. And that's where the story turns into something even more interesting, because the following level of luck will involve an even greater herd of cows.





The same narrative further proceeds to state that a person having ten lakh cows is known as Vrishabhanu. Ten lakh is an eye-catching number because it implies one million. According to the narrative, while the nine lakh cows of Nanda symbolize luck and prosperity, ten lakh cows of Vrishabhanu indicate even more wealth and prosperity. This paves way for the appearance of Radha. It is amazing to note how beautifully this symbolism has been used to show that while Krishna has appeared in the house which was a symbol of good luck, Radha has appeared in a house that symbolizes more luck.

The festival of Radha Ashtami falls on the Bhadrapada Shukla Ashtami Tithi of Bhadrapada month. It is said that Radha took birth in the household of Vrishabhanu on the same tithi. According to legend, Radha’s birth took place in the middle of the day when the sun was at its peak of brilliance. Thus, Radha is described in the tale as appearing during a period of divine luminosity. For North India, in 2026, the festival of Radha Ashtami will take place on September 19.

Another fascinating aspect of the traditional story is that of the link between the Anuradha nakshatra. The term Anuradha is said to be based on the concept of following or devotion. The traditional tale takes advantage of this by explaining how Radha was named after being born in the divine form of Radha. It suits the tradition of Radha very well since Radha is known as the ultimate symbol of love and devotion for Krishna. However, the timings of nakshatras differ as per their location and the Panchang calendar. According to the Panchang calendar of 2026, Anuradha falls from September 16 evening to September 17 evening, whereas Radha Ashtami is celebrated on September 19.

The concept of Radha as a metaphor for saubhagya is much more than just about the acquisition of money or assets. In devotional philosophy, luck may involve the reception of affection, grace, devotion, and even a chance to remember God. Therefore, the account of the million cows owned by Vrishabhanu becomes highly symbolic rather than concrete. The possession of a million cows sets up an image of great prosperity, while Radha's arrival is presented as a visitation of prosperity in its spiritual aspect. This is the reason for the continued importance of Radha Rani in Krishna bhakti where devotion is valued above all material riches.
