Do We Love Them or How They Make Us Feel?

Sometimes, the person we cannot stop thinking about is not necessarily the person we know deeply. We may become attached to the attention they give us, the confidence they bring out in us, or the emotional rush we experience around them. The surprising part is that these feelings can be completely real while our understanding of the person remains incomplete.

Have you ever met someone and thought, “There is something about them”? You may feel happier around them, more confident when they notice you, or strangely empty when they are gone. It feels like love, but there is a deeper question hiding underneath: Do you actually love the person, or do you love how you feel when you are with them? Romantic attraction can be shaped by attention, validation, excitement, emotional safety and even the version of yourself that appears around someone. Understanding that difference can completely change how you look at relationships.

Attraction Often Starts With a Feeling

The first stage of romantic attraction is often less about knowing someone deeply and more about how we feel around them. Their attention may make us feel attractive, interesting or understood. Their messages can create excitement, while their presence may temporarily quiet loneliness. None of this means the feeling is fake. It simply means emotional attraction can develop before genuine knowledge of a person does. We may fall for the comfort, excitement or validation first, and only later discover whether we truly connect with their personality, values and real-life behaviour.

Sometimes attraction becomes stronger when something feels uncertain. Waiting for a message, wondering what someone thinks about you, or trying to understand mixed signals can create intense emotional anticipation. That uncertainty may make the connection feel unusually powerful. This is one reason romantic attraction can sometimes be confused with compatibility. You might be thinking about someone constantly because the situation remains unresolved, not because you have discovered that they are truly right for you. The feeling is real, but the reason behind it may be very different from what you initially believe.

We Can Fall for Our Best Self

There is another hidden layer to falling in love: sometimes we become attached to who we are around another person. Maybe they make you more playful, confident, ambitious or emotionally open. You may start thinking, “I love who I am with them.” That feeling can be beautiful, but it is worth separating the two experiences. Loving your best self around someone does not automatically mean you know or love them deeply. Healthy relationships eventually require seeing the whole person, including their flaws, habits, boundaries and values, rather than only the version that makes you feel wonderful.

Attention Can Feel Like Compatibility

Being listened to can feel incredibly intimate. When someone remembers small details, checks on you or gives you consistent attention, you may naturally feel emotionally connected. But emotional connection and compatibility are not always the same thing. Ask yourself whether you genuinely share values, communication styles and expectations for a relationship. Someone can make you feel deeply wanted while still being very different from you in ways that matter long-term. Attention tells you how someone makes you feel in the moment. Compatibility tells you whether your lives can actually work together.

Ask What You Really Know

Strong chemistry can encourage us to fill in the blanks. We may imagine someone as kind, loyal or emotionally mature because that is how we hope they are. But relationship psychology reminds us that attraction does not automatically give us accurate information about another person. Ask yourself: What do I actually know about them? How do they behave when angry? How do they treat people who cannot benefit them? Do their actions match their words? These questions move you from fantasy toward reality. The goal is not to kill the excitement, but to understand what the excitement is built on.

Notice Who You Miss

When someone leaves your life, the emptiness can be confusing. You might say, “I miss them,” when what you really miss is being wanted, having someone to talk to or feeling emotionally important. Try separating the person from the experience. Healthy relationships are built on knowing and accepting someone as they actually are, not simply missing the emotions they create. If you removed the compliments, attention, chemistry and excitement, what qualities would still make you choose that person? Your answer may reveal more about your attachment than your strongest romantic feelings ever could.

Love Becomes Clear With Time

You do not have to solve every feeling immediately. Time can reveal what intense attraction cannot. As the excitement settles, you begin seeing the person's ordinary habits, difficult moments, boundaries and imperfections. That is where true love and attraction begin to separate. Love is not simply the emotional high someone gives you. It can involve understanding, respect, trust, acceptance and a genuine interest in who they are. So the next time someone makes your heart race, enjoy the feeling, but stay curious. Instead of asking only, “How do they make me feel?” ask, “Who are they when the feeling fades?”
