IPL Suspended, PSL Relocated: Cricket Comes to a Halt Amid India-Pakistan Tensions
On May 9, 2025, the Indian Premier League (IPL) was suspended indefinitely due to rising military tensions between India and Pakistan. Just hours later, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) was relocated to the United Arab Emirates for similar reasons.
These decisions were not just about matches being cancelled. They reflect a serious reality—when national security is at risk, even the biggest sporting events must pause.
Why Was the IPL Suspended?
Ipl 2025
The decision to suspend IPL 2025 came after a deadly terrorist attack on April 22 in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, where 26 people lost their lives. India responded with military action against terror camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. In return, Pakistan launched missile and drone attacks on civilian and military areas in India, targeting regions like Jammu, Punjab, and Rajasthan.
The turning point came during a match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala. Air raid alerts were issued in nearby areas like Jammu and Pathankot. The match was stopped midway and spectators were evacuated for safety. IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal was seen helping in the evacuation process.
The very next day, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made the decision to suspend the tournament.
At the time of suspension, 58 matches had been played. Twelve league matches and four playoffs, including the final in Kolkata, were still pending.
PSL Moved to Dubai
Psl 2025
This marks a major change in the tournament, which had been hosted successfully across Pakistan up to that point. Now, players, staff, and equipment are being moved overseas. The new schedule is expected to be announced soon.
Cricket vs. Conflict: The Cost of War
Kargil War (1999) – India toured England, but cricket in South Asia continued.
Mumbai Attacks (2008) – Pakistan was banned from hosting, but cricket survived.
Pulwama Attack (2019) – Tensions rose, but IPL wasn’t canceled.
In 2025, it’s different. Both countries are actively striking each other. No one knows what’s next.
What Happens Next?
Foreign players who were part of the IPL are already flying back home. Many of them were uncomfortable staying in a country under military alert. Team buses have been rerouted, and fans have been left disappointed.
Similarly, PSL franchises are now working with the PCB and UAE authorities to ensure a smooth transition to Dubai. Foreign players involved in the PSL have expressed relief at the decision to relocate.
Cricket and Real Life Collide
In India and Pakistan, people are more worried about safety than scores. Stadiums that once echoed with cheers are now quiet. Security forces are on high alert. Matches have been replaced by news updates. It’s a tough situation for everyone—from fans and players to organizers and broadcasters.
Fans
But what makes this moment different is the direct link to military conflict. The threat is real and immediate. And that has forced both boards to act swiftly in the interest of player and public safety.
Impact on Fans and Players

Broadcasters and sponsors are facing losses too. Ad campaigns, live shows, and merchandise sales are all affected.
A Pause, Not the End
Cricket boards are already working behind the scenes to find solutions. The UAE, which hosted the IPL in 2020 and part of 2021, is once again a possible host if needed.
A United Wish for Peace
Fans on both sides are sharing the same hope—not just for cricket to return, but for peace to return first.
The suspension of the IPL and the relocation of the PSL are strong reminders of how real-world conflicts can affect even the most powerful industries. Cricket, despite its popularity and emotion, cannot exist outside the world it belongs to.
Cricket will return, no doubt. But until then, the world watches and waits. And hopes that when the game resumes, it brings with it not just entertainment, but healing.
